Delivery Driver Insurance

If you are a delivery driver, you will need to purchase insurance to cover you for delivery or courier driving. Delivery driver insurance often comes with higher mileage allowances, and an understanding that you will be undertaking multiple deliveries in one journey or day. helps delivery drivers, like you, find the right delivery insurance to keep you on the road legally and ensure you are making a living from your delivery job. Whilst delivery insurance isn’t the cheapest, normal van or car insurance would not cover you in the event of a claim, and could result in you getting 6 points and a £300 fine.

What do I need to be a delivery driver?

If you want to become a delivery driver, it can be very simple. Firstly, you need to decide if you want to set up your own business, or work for a larger one. By working for a larger delivery company who look for self employed drivers, you can be up and running with lower costs i.e. no marketing costs.

Once you have decided, you will need to find a vehicle. Most delivery drivers look for vans that can hold bigger, or more goods that need to be delivered. That way, they can keep efficiencies high by doing 1, long journey a day with multiple drops. Once you have a vehicle, the next step is delivery driver insurance which is where can help.

Different Levels of Deliver Insurance

If you are working for a bigger firm, you may want to find out what their minimum insurance requirements are to make sure that you abide by their terms and conditions. There are three main levels of cover for delivery drivers.

Third party only cover - This is the lowest level of cover required to drive legally in the UK. As a delivery driver, this would cover the cost of any damage to another person’s vehicle or property but will not cover damage to your own vehicle.

Third party, fire and theft (TPFT) cover - Third party, fire and theft courier insurance is one step up from third party only. This level of cover comes with the additional benefit of covering damage caused by fire and theft as the name suggests.

Comprehensive cover - The highest level of cover available for delivery insurance in the UK is comprehensive insurance. This covers you for damage to another person's property or vehicle, it covers against fire and theft of your vehicle, and it covers you against damage to yourself and your own vehicle.

Delivery Driver Insurance Excess

If you are looking to reduce your insurance costs, some brokers or providers may suggest you increase your excess. But what is an excess?

An excess is an amount of money you would need to pay to fix damages, in the event of a claim. There are two types of excess, compulsory and voluntary. Compulsory excesses are set by the insurer and part of the terms and conditions. Voluntary excesses are defined by you, the policy holder. By increasing your voluntary excess, you may be able to reduce the amount of money you spend on your delivery insurance but, you must make sure that you are able to afford the compulsory and voluntary amounts together if you were to make a claim.
