Which driving convictions do you provide cover for?

We can provide drink driver insurance cover for all driving convictions including:

• DR10 - Given to people for driving or attempting to drive with alcohol levels above the limit
• DR20 - Given to people for driving or attempting to drive while unfit through drink
• DR30 - Given to people for driving or attempting to drive then failing to supply a specimen for analysis
• DR31 - Given to people for driving or attempting to drive and then refusing to give permission for analysis of a blood sample that was taken without consent due to incapacity
• DR61 - Given to people for refusing to give permission for analysis of a blood sample that was taken without consent due to incapacity in circumstances other than driving or attempting to drive.

The above endorsement codes are accompanied with between three and 11 penalty points, depending on the offence.

The following codes must stay on your licence for four years from the date of the offence:

• DR40 - Given to people for being in charge of a vehicle while alcohol level above the limit
• DR50 - Given to people for being in charge of a vehicle while unfit through drink
• DR60 - Given to people for failure to provide a specimen for analysis in circumstances other than driving or attempting to drive
• DR70 - Given to people for failing to provide specimen for breath test

I’ve heard people are being convicted of drink driving offences the day after consuming alcohol.

This is true, it can take a while for alcohol to leave your system. Sometimes the morning after a few too many drinks, it may not be legal to drive your car. You may feel fine or you may feel a little thick headed but you may not assume that you would be over the limit and still affected by the drinks you had last night.

If you are crossing the border to Scotland, you should be wary.

In Scotland, the drink driving limits are lower than in England and Wales so if you have had a drink and are legal to drive, be careful when crossing the border. If you were to be tested and show a reading of, for example, 0.7 BAC you could land yourself with a driving ban.

Do I need to tell my employer about my drink driving conviction?

You should declare your conviction to your employer however if the conviction is spent then you don’t need to. A conviction is usually spent 5 years from the date of the conviction under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
